Friday Session 1: System level tools for understanding networked electric vehicle economy

Continuing the Network Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) theme from Thursday, we will present the participants the benefits of shared information production on a web platform. In order to enable a large scale circular economy design by many participants, it is necessary to develop tools which enable the interested parties of Circular Economy networks to plan their actions and assess the impacts of these actions both individually and collectively. For this purpose, we need systemic level simulation models, whose evaluation principles (data, metadata, simulation model codes) should be openly accessible and improvable by all network members continuously.

Assessment Method related goals: Develop collectively a useful, scientifically sound and improvable model for electric vehicle economy, which can be used by all participants and other interested parties also after the workshop

Application areas: electric vehicle battery production, usage and recycling/re-manufacturing, electric care manufacturing and consumer behavior.

Linked modeling domains (data flow in the upscaling model chain): Life Cycle Assessment model -> Life Cycle Cost (LCC) model -> System Dynamic economy model

Learning goals: Participants learn that there are tools that everyone can use either on their own or with the aid of experts (e.g. life cycle assessment consultancy) in planning and testing circular economy activities (production, products, re-cycling etc.). The participants will learn the value of quality data and metadata as well as the value of shared, privacy respecting information sharing.

Detailed workshop contents

  • Linking the theme to Thursday’s input
  • Short introduction to system dynamic modeling with examples and experiences from multiple fields
  • Walking the audience through the ready-made system dynamic EV economy model, i.e. explaining the causal relations and the hierarchies present in the model (“story telling mode”, which makes it possible to understand the content without complicated mathematics)
  • Collective validation of the model, discussion and collection of critique and further development ideas from the expert audience (improving the model based on collective validation is one of the goals/outputs of the workshop)
  • Demonstration of the usage of the EV economy model (integrated with the LCA model from Thursday) by performing a comparison (live) between two scenarios chosen by the audience. We should also highlight the information flow from and to the other integrated models (LCA).
  • Individual testing with participants’s own parameter choices/data (after the lecture and demo parts have ended, a longer coffee break begins and the individual testing can be embedded into the coffee break)
